I guess my flywheel decided to take a crap on me so now I need to drop the tranny to take a look....


How hard is it to remove? Any precautions I need to take while removeing it?

ugh.

^excellent suggestion.

take up the carpet, screws around shifter, remove shifter.
remove driveshaft. plug it's butt so you dont lose all the fluid.
a transmission jack would come in pretty handy, but the tranny is not too heavy, so you should be able to do it anyway.
dont forget to unbolt the slave cylinder, backup light switch and wire clips. bolts use 17mm and 14mm sockets. have fun.

I replaced my clutch last 2 weeks ago, pretty easy really. It took me about an hour to get the trans out, but I have done this many times on various vehicles, this is a pretty easy vehicle to do it on. For the upper two bolts on the bell housing, wait until you've already undone the trans mount and can lower the tail shaft a little. This will make more room to use a combination of extensions to get to the top two bolts undone. Then to remove the trans I found it easy to get out if you push it back to separate it from the engine then rotate the top toward the right hand side of the vehicle, then lower the front and pull forward to get the tailshaft out.
It wasn't a problem on my truck, but sometimes you need to be aware that when the back of the engine is lowered down the lower fan blades may push into the radiator.

I think most of the advice on removing a transmission is the same. The specifics I gave for positioning the trans to get it out I'm sure will vary. But the bolt pattern should be identical so lowering the tail end and using extensions to remove the top two bolts should be the same. You should also have some lines that run to and from a trans cooler with the auto. The auto will probably be bigger and heavier making it more difficult to maneuver out. Personally if I was removing the auto I would probably replace it with a manual gearbox and find your self a factory pedal box and convert it over.

So, "ugh" is a pretty much a shorter version of some of the things I said.

you also might have to unbolt the motor mounts and hoist the motor up a few inches to gain the right angle to get the tanny out.

only thing with an electrical plug on the left side of the tranny.

oh yeah and dont forget to unbolt the bracket from the crossmember it will have two bolts on top and two on the side.

my first hilux transmision was cooked and i couldnt get it out for a day ir two till i found the bolts for the bracket undernieth heaps of goey dirty sluge
