im sure this has been a topic before but i couldnt find the thread. i went to pick up my tranny at the shop today and was also given a 5 spd. i currently have a 4spd in my truck now and am thinking about putting in the 5 speed. my question is.. because i currently have a 4speed tranny, the gearing in my differential is different from the 5speed tranny and rearend. if i put a 5 speed tranny in my truck which originally came with a 4speed what will it do proformance wise. will it make first gear almost worthless because the gearing will be so low? what would be the rpm differnance at freeway speeds. right now with my 4 speed, at around 70 mph, its spinning pretty good. i wont take it over 75 unless im passing because the rpms are up there. would the 5 speed make a noticable difference in drivability? (rpm rate, gas mileage, etc.) also, has anyone ever done this swap? any pros, cons? from reading another thread i hear the tranny mounts are different...different as in how, the trannymount to cossmember connection or tranny to crossmember connection? in other words is it as easy as unbolt one mount for the 4speed and bolt in the 5speed mount? sorry for the book....thanks in advance.

I will look tomorrow at the gear ratios, the rears should be the same from standard trans to another standard the only time I have seen the rears different is for Automatics and for different size motors. The trans mount not sure about either cause I bought a transd mount from Napa for my truck and they had only 1 listed for the 5 and 4 speed and I have the 4 speed and it bolted up no problem put it in today, Also I would never get rid of my 4 speed, Drove 5 speed truck and it doesnt take off like the 4 speed

The 5spd would make a difference in rpm in final gear and the fuel economy would be better. I really don't know what the ratio is between the 4 and 5 spd so i can't say for sure.
I am wanting to swap in the 5spd for the same reasons you are, it tops out too soon and at a high rpm and the gas mileage isn't really all that great. Maybe I am just used to my car, it has a red line of 8200.

Seth had mentioned the mounts are a bit different between the 4 and 5 but toher than that they should be identical. He said he would post a pic of the mounts earlier this week.

cool, thats exactly what i wanted to know. ive driven a 5 spd. in a 90's model toyota standard cab only it had the 22re in it. it seemed alright but it felt like the 22re is a slower motor than the 22r. i like how the gears in the 4 speed tranny run longer when accelerating but the high way sucks donkey balls cause the truck at 75-80 the rpms are pretty high. i dunno, i own both i guess i could put in the 5 speed drive it and if i dont like it just put the 4 back in.

what did it do for the gas mileage? better or worse or didnt change? not that its a big big deal but im just curious. seems that it would get better cause the rpms would be lower on the highway.

whoops i was writing mine as you were. lol.

yeah i remember him saying something about the mounts just wanted to know what the difference was.

i was able to have a chance to look at the two trannys side by side today at the shop... they are really close looking from one another but the 5 speed is slightly bigger where the spedo cable mount in at...but if they werent side by side, you cant really tell them apart. lol.

That is the only thing I disliked about the 4spd was that it topped out to quickly. I loved the low end and being able to rev the shit out the gears. Plus I could do some serious burnouts with the 4spd and the way it was geared. LOL I put a new set of studded snow tires on the back one day for shits and giggles and timed how long it took to get down to the radials. It took under 8min. for both tires to be down the radial chords, lol it was a fun day indeed.

I'm afraid that I will lose a little performance than I like with the 5spd. But the additional gas mileage and being able to drive faster thean 80 would greatly be appreciated.

My 88 is a 5 speed, w/ 22re,not a stock engine, but when stock planty of low end pull. Top end is planty high w/ rpm's around 2,500 to 3,000 at 70 to 80. You can get a lighter flywheel(have one) from LC & the engine will spool up quiter!
would never run a 4 speed,if anything else, would like a 6 speed!

Do me a favor, look under your hood at the id tag and look for the gear ratio #'s please. I'll grab my numbers and compare them to see how much of a difference there is between the two.

I agree, I'd love to have a 6spd in my truck. My celica has a 6spd and I love it

I have done a little research on this as i too have a four speed. The four speed and the five speed have the same gear ratios for every gear with the fifth gear being an overdrive of .85:1, so you will not lose or gain anything by swapping but gas mileage.

First Gear: 3.566:1
Second Gear: 2.056:1
Third Gear: 1.384:1
Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
Reverse: -4.091:1

First Gear: 3.566:1
Second Gear: 2.056:1
Third Gear: 1.384:1
Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
Fifth Gear: 0.85:1
Reverse: -4.091:1

well you can check out my thread. http://yotascene.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2500

Their are 2 bolts at the top of the engine 16mm use a swivel and a long extension. Dont forget to remove the shifter befor anything else. It is pretty straight forword other then that to remove the trans.
They 14'a but I keep them clean.

to make a long story short, i dusted my rearend i think (ill know more when i pull it apart this weekend) does anyone know or have a book that has what the ratio is in the rearend? i put my 4 spd back in but since i might have to rebuild it, i might as well rebuild it with gears that will work best with my 5 speed. anyways, all im looking for is the 5 speed rearend ratio and the 4 speed rearend ratio. i know there were a few different rearends for both trannys, i dont know which id numbers to get off the tag to help id wich one i have.

quinn, i remember a while back you posted a website that get really good information about identifying the different rearends and possibly what the ratios were. do you remember what im talking about?

Thanks a bunch guys!

Yup, here you go Jeff. Just remember these are 4wd sites but most of the info will translate to the 2wd's.

If you need a new 3rd member check the junk yards, its gonna be a lot cheaper than buying a new one. I have a spare hoghead that has 3:88's (originally w/ 4 spd) it does need new pinion bearings.
