thank quinn.

im hopeing that the gears are still good and just the bearings were trashed. ill probably know more this weekend when i pull it apart. i guess now would be the time to powdercoat the link bars and rearend housing. haha.

i had my Ujoint replaced and the mechanic said my pinion nut was really loose so he tightened it up. (it felt like it had alot of resistance on it but i assumed it was because of the new Ujoints)i made it about 10 miles the rear end go so hot it melted the seals and started to sling oil everywhere. i could hear crunching noises from my rear end binding up when i was loading it onto the trailer. took it back in there and he backed the nut off a little bit but and replaced the seal but i think the damage is already done. ill know more when its apart.

okay well i tried to decifer what i have in my truck as far as gearing ratio's. with the information off of that website and the model numbers off of my truck, nothing matches. for instance the model number i pulled off of my rear end pinon was b7xn which only the 'b' matches the table everything eles is different. where are the numbers on the rearend located? do i even have the right one? my truck is an 88 and on the decifer for the vin number it says its for 95 and earier but it stops at 89. the engine type for my 88 along with trans isnt even listed. i dont get it.

once apart, is there a way to calculate the ratio by hand?

sure. mark your pinion, and mark your hub. see how many revolutions it takes to turn it once. theres your ration(roughly.)

which numbers on the tag are what. iknow the first one is the paint code. 138 then its like tr/a/tm....i dont know what those are. but what i think is the rear end code is G662 which isnt referenced on the decifer i have. i think the last number is w46 which i think is the tranny type. which isnt listed either. my 88 must be one hell of an odd truck. :(

You probably have this sorted by now, but if not. G662 is an 2 pinion 8" ring gear with a 3.08:1 ratio. This is the same set up I have in my truck with the W48 4 speed.

How did you like the 5 speed in your truck? How did the mount work out? Somebody told me that the 5 speed was a little longer than the 4 speed and the driveshaft would need to be shortened. Did you have to shorten yours?

Thanks.

no, everything was a straight over swap. i did have to use the tranny mount for the 5 speed though. everything else also just swapped right in...the drive line was fine, crossmember was fine, clutch, clutch fork, and slave cylinder all mated together nicely. the trannys are the same length. just the 5 speed has an extra little hump at the bottom...

i have since swapped my 4 speed tranny back in the truck because i didnt gain anything out of the 5 speed with my stock 4 speed rear end. the 5 speed caused my truck to lose its lowerend, and at top end it actually tached higher at 80 than it did whith the 4 speed. had i swapped the 5 speed rear end gearing im sure it would have been perfect but i didnt.

i have a 5 speed tranny and a brand new tranny mount for sale if anyone is interested. ive opened the tranny up myself, the sincros, gears, and linkage are all in great shape.
