so im rebuilding my rear end for the second time in 6 months. but now i have a real problem. my truck is an 88 with a 4 speed trans. i gave toyota my vin number and they told me that i have a 43:14 ratio out back. wich if i did the math correctly makes it a 3.07 gear ratio. now the issue is, i cant find this ring and pinion gear set. i was told by the guy who i got all my bearings and stuff from that its an uncommon gear set and they dont make them anymore because demand just isnt great enough. i thought he was just bsing me so i've been scowering the internet all morning now and have come up with every gear set but the one i need. toyota can get them but they want over 900 bucks for them. i would rather not buy those if i dont have to. i also have a 5 speed trans, which i could put the 4.10 gears in the rear end and use my 5 speed tranny, but from my understanding there were a few different 5 speed trannys... and two different rearends for them. i dont know which tranny i have to match the right rear end ratio to. toyota wont give out the trans info and far as ratios go... any help would be really appreciated...its been in the 40 and 30's all week, and all i have is my motorcycle to ride :( . i need my truck back. haha.

Jeff your cheapest and easiest route is going to the salvage yards and buying a whole rearend and swapping the 3rds. Toyota ring and pinions are like gold especially the non 4wd gearing. I hauled off my 3:31's a couple months ago with a load of scrap, wish I wouldn't have now. If you can find a 3rd that is still set up and the diffy is in good shape (no slop) it will swap out with ease. Here's a couple more links if you lost those from a while back.

http://www.drivetrain.com/ToyotaRingPinion.html

http://www.fourwheeler.com/techarticles ... index.html

http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/vin/

http://www.allstategear.com/index.htm

When I did the swap from the 4sp/ 3:31 to the 5spd/ 4:10 itreally wasn't much difference as far as top end. I'd like to have seen what it would be with the 3:31

cool, thanks quinn. i checked those sites earlier but i dont even see a 3.07 ratio even being a ratio on the decifer thing. maybe the guy at toyota told me wrong. ill get the info off my id tag and count teeth tommorrow and double check everything on that site to see whats going on. is there a site that tells you what ratios for what trannys based on the trans code? are the trannys stamped with the code reference on them.. for example like a W36? i couldnt find it on my 5 speed.

Jeff honestly i havn't found anything on just 2wd info. Most of the info I have found has been all on 4wd, I have never found a replacement set for my 3:31 other than at the dealership or by scrounging through the juskyards and finding one with similar tags as mine.

I'll do a little more looking around and if I find anything I'll send it your way.

cool, thanks quinn.

toyota king, if you have a few 3rds laying around that are still good i might be interested in them. all i need is the ring and pinon gears. all the bearings and stuff will be brand new. im a little weary about using used gears as its kinda like playing russian roulette. i dont really know what im getting and i dont want to pull the rear end out for a 3 time or replace 400 dollars in bearings for the 3rd time either. haha. the problem i had was that the yoke (or as toyota calls it the flange) was walking on the pinion causing it to wiggle loose after 50 miles or so. ill get all the details on my 3rd today, tooth count on both ring and pinion, spline count, and im gonna get the numbers off the id tag to reference stuff to the site quinn gave me. thanks again guys!

so i decided to go with a 4:10 gear set. according to randys ring and pinion, my 2wd drive truck came with a 7.5" rear end... which they say its specific only to my 3.07 ring and pinion ratio. basically he said i cant step up to a 4:10 because there isnt enought room in the rearend to accomodate the bigger gear. quinn you said you went to 4:10s in your rear end? did you have the 7.5" rear end? randys basically said i need a whole new 8" drop out???? :?: is this true? i know alot of people have done the whole re-gear and 5 speed swap? did anyone else have this problem?

Mmmmm. mine has the little notch in the gasket for the ring to clear. If memory serves me right it was the 8in style rear. Basically the only difference between the 7.5 and 8in rearend is the 8in has a bigger gear hence the notch.

this is the one link I couldn't find that should help you the most.

THANKS SO MUCH QUINN. that other table is much more complete. i just ordered a complete drop out today from randys ring and pinion. 4:10 gears. with the 8" diff, i couldnt go to a bigger gear with my drop out setup because the added width would hit the carrier bearing. basically what it boiled down to is that i had to order an entire drop out from randys for 600 thats offset to accomodate the 4:10's from the carrier bearing or i could order just the ring and pinion gears from toyota for 950 dollars. i went with the cheaper better solution in this case. haha. wish i would have known this before i fixed it (so i thought) the first time. could have saved ALOT of time and money.

okay so after a little modification to my housing i got a whole new third member put in the toyota. what a big difference from the 3.07 to the 4.10 gear. with the 4 speed and a 4.10, my top speed is 65. hopefully my 5 speed tranny will balance this out... its shitty driving around town. at 55 it sounds like im on the freeway doing 80. haha. and it knocked my speedo waaaaay off. lol. everything is painted with a little airbrush work, ill get pictures up soon. also, my old powdercoated third member will be for sale. its a bright green, ill also get pictures of it as well.

@65 you should be around 2500rpm with the 5spd pending on the final drive ratio.

toyotaman, go to randys ring and pinon for your gear set... i think mine was 600 bucks shipped to my door. its a full complete rear end. housing, bearings, gears, set up and ready to drop in. i have a 3.07 gear set but am unsure as to how good they are. my yoke was trashed and just decided to go with a whole new rear end. my housing and everything is for sale to, its powder coated green. personally i think i went to too high of a ratio (4.10) in the rear. with my 5 speed, on my old gears (the 3.07) i lost all my low end, and my top end sucked balls to. but we'll see when it goes in for the second time.

ill try to get pictures of everything tonight. its been a little hecktic lately.

yeah i think the final drive in my 5 speed is like, .83:1 so we'll see. can you mark the the shaft that goes into the flywheel put it in 5th gear and turn it 1 full rotation. and see how far the tail shaft turns to get a rough estimate? toyota wont give out trans ratio info. im going to sift through the sites you posted up to see if i can get any more info on the tranny ratios.

also, how would you calebrate the speedo since is cable driven?
